School of Tourism and Geographical Sciences

The School of Tourism and Geographical Sciences was established as an independent college in 2017 and currently offers two undergraduate programs: Geography and Tourism Management. The Geography program began enrollment in 2006, and the Tourism Management program in 2008. The school currently has 615 full-time students. The faculty team consists of young backbone teachers from Boda College and highly qualified senior teachers from Jilin Normal University, forming a strong and well-structured team in terms of age, educational background, and professional title. The school has established one provincial-level excellent course, two college-level excellent courses, one provincial off-campus practice education base, and one provincial experimental area for innovative talent training models. In recent years, the School of Tourism and Geographical Sciences has achieved abundant teaching and research results. It has received approval for one Ministry of Education Industry-University Cooperation Collaborative Education project, one Ministry of Education Supply-Demand Employment Education project, 13 provincial-level teaching and research projects, one Ministry of Culture and Tourism student team practice support project, and one Jilin Province Digital Economy Student Project. Faculty members have published seven papers in core journals or above and received ten provincial-level or higher teaching and research awards. Students have won numerous awards in various competitions, including: two second prizes in the Tian Jiabing Cup National Normal University Teaching Skills Competition, one first prize, two second prizes, and two excellence awards in the National Geography Micro-Lesson Competition for Normal Students, one provincial gold, two silver, and one bronze prize in the “Internet+” Competition, two second prizes in the Provincial College Student Red Tourism Volunteer Guide Competition, one first prize, four second prizes, and one third prize in the Jilin Province College Student Cultural Tourism Competition, and ten second prizes and five third prizes in the Provincial Ice and Snow Creativity Competition.

The School adheres to the educational philosophy of “Development is the hard truth, quality is the lifeline,” with discipline construction as the leading focus and professional development as the core, cultivating high-quality talents that meet societal needs. The school emphasizes professional skill development, with on-campus laboratories including geology, cartography, earth science, and comprehensive tourism management labs, as well as multiple multimedia classrooms, providing excellent teaching and practical environments. Off-campus, the Geography program has established field practice bases at Qinhuangdao Geological and Geomorphology Base, Qinhuangdao Zushan Physical Geography Base, and Dalian–Changbai Mountain Human Geography Field Base. The Tourism Management program collaborates with five-star hotels under Hilton, Marriott, and InterContinental brands, establishing multiple internship bases in Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Guangdong, and Hainan, maintaining long-term stable school-enterprise cooperation. By integrating teaching, internship, and employment, the school broadens employment channels, with graduates highly welcomed by employers and consistently ranking at the top of the university in graduate school admission and employment rates.

Geography

Program Objectives: Guided by the Party’s educational policy and national education development strategy, and oriented toward the demand for basic education talents, this program aims to cultivate high-quality, professional, innovative secondary school geography teachers with strong political literacy, excellent professional ethics, solid humanistic and scientific knowledge, systematic geographic knowledge and skills, advanced educational concepts, outstanding teaching and research abilities, and strong collaboration and reflection capabilities, while also providing quality candidates for related postgraduate programs.

Main Courses: Fundamentals of Geology, Introduction to Earth Science, Cartography, Meteorology and Climatology, Geomorphology, Hydrology, Soil Geography, Plant Geography, Integrated Physical Geography, Human Geography, Economic Geography, World Geography, Geography of China, Geography Curriculum and Teaching, Blackboard Writing Techniques for Geography, Geological and Geomorphological Field Practice, Physical Geography Field Practice, Human Geography Field Practice.

Career Prospects: Geography teachers in junior and senior high schools, researchers in scientific institutes, staff in related enterprises and institutions, or national civil servants.

Program Features: This program emphasizes solid theoretical foundations and practical teaching skills. Training includes geography board maps, blackboard writing, diagrams, multimedia courseware production, and overall teaching abilities. Extensive field practice enhances hands-on skills, observation, and comprehensive practical abilities.

Duration & Degree: Four years, awarded the Bachelor of Science degree.

Tourism Management Program

Program Objectives: Oriented toward the development needs of the modern tourism industry, this program cultivates application-oriented professionals with strong professional ethics, solid foundational and specialized tourism knowledge, an international perspective, strong innovation and collaboration skills, service awareness, and high social responsibility. Graduates are familiar with tourism operations, qualified for industry certifications, proficient in practical skills, and capable of working in business, management, planning, consulting, and service roles in tourism-related enterprises and institutions.

Main Courses: Tourism, Management, Economics, Hospitality Management, Destination Management, Tourism Consumer Behavior, Tourism Planning and Development, Tourism Marketing, Tourism Enterprise Financial Management, Tourism Law, Travel Agency Operations and Management.

Career Prospects: Management staff in tourism enterprises and institutions, tourism administrative department personnel, tourism educators.

Program Features: Following the principle of “practical skills, employment-oriented, character cultivation,” the program combines theory and practice, explicit and implicit education, forming an integrated educational system and the “3-4-5” talent training model:

1. Strengthening practical application: A three-stage practice system of in-class training, simulation operations, and competition-based practice, integrating teaching, learning, and application.

2. Focusing on professional thresholds: A four-in-one qualification enhancement system of theoretical learning, certification training, skill development, and simulation assessments, ensuring students meet industry standards for a smooth transition from campus to workplace.

3. Shaping professional character: A five-in-one professional ability system of industry awareness, in-class training, entrepreneurship guidance, comprehensive exercises, and graduation internship, integrating professional spirit and character cultivation throughout teaching.
